Equal opportunities for all families

The Progressive Eltern- und Erzieher*innen-Verband NRW e. V. (PEV) is a family association, parent representation organization and independent youth welfare organization all in one. Its work is aimed at parents and caregivers as well as educational professionals and employees in educational institutions.

The Familienportal.NRW asked the association to briefly present its work, goals and commitment.

What are the goals of PEV NRW?

The PEV NRW is a family association, parent representation organization and independent youth welfare organization (especially family education) and is committed to improving the education, care and living conditions of children, young people and families. Our aim is to strengthen families and professionals, counteract inequalities and change structures - for a solidary, diverse and just society. We therefore fight for equal opportunities, democratic co-determination and full participation.

Who is the association addressing?

We address families in all their diversity: for us, family is wherever people take responsibility and care for each other on a long-term basis. We are particularly interested in people who want to actively shape their living environment and advocate for social justice, sustainable development and children's rights. In particular, we approach families who experience structural disadvantages and want to make their legitimate concerns visible together with others.

How are the families supported?

We offer educational opportunities, spaces for exchange and self-help, strengthen parental involvement and support projects for families that are close to the social environment. Through information, networks and further training, we support structures that enable families to articulate their concerns and participate democratically. We also represent family and education policy needs to decision-makers and promote exchange and networking between parents and professionals (in the sense of active educational partnerships).

What are currently the three most pressing issues?

  1. Reducing social inequalities and creating justice (especially between the sexes and within the education system by overcoming structural underfunding).
  2. Strengthening families affected by and at risk of poverty and financing structures that help to cope with and overcome this complex everyday and stressful situation.
  3. Democratic participation and (civic) social engagement of families.

Why is it worth getting involved in the association's work?

Because they can play an active role in various areas and at various levels: At PEV NRW, families find tailor-made educational opportunities, spaces for dialog and positive communal experiences as well as spaces for civil society action. Through their involvement, they strengthen solidarity, democratic processes and consistent advocacy for fair living conditions - for themselves and for others. They can actively contribute positions, network with allies and gain access to valuable information and support structures.
