For the second time, the North Rhine-Westphalian Ministry of Family Affairs is awarding the "Family Municipality" state prize, recognizing particularly family-friendly municipalities for their commitment. The motto of the 2025 award is: "Family. Community. Cohesion."
The closing date for applications is August 15, 2025.

Family-friendly communities in NRW

North Rhine-Westphalia is a family-friendly state. The municipalities make a decisive contribution to this. Regardless of whether it is a large city, medium-sized town, small town or rural municipality - family-friendliness can be experienced directly where you live. Family-oriented intergenerational projects, the participation of children and parents in planning processes or a family-friendly town hall: many local authorities are increasingly thinking about administration from the perspective of families.

Josefine Paul, Minister for Family Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia:

"Family life takes place first and foremost on the ground. That is why the creative and innovative commitment of local authorities in this area is particularly important. With this award, we want to honor the particularly committed municipalities and make their projects known throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. The award-winning projects will then certainly also serve as inspiration for other municipalities."

The "Family Community" state prize

The "Family Municipality" state prize was awarded for the first time in 2024. With this award, the North Rhine-Westphalian state government recognizes the commitment of municipalities to family friendliness and helps to make innovative projects and good practice examples known throughout the state - as both inspiration and a blueprint.

Application information

All municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia that are committed to family policy and take account of the diversity of everyday family life and demographic change with an overall concept or individual projects are invited to apply.

The jury

A jury from science, society and the Ministry of Family Affairs will once again decide on the awards this year.

Award ceremony

An award ceremony is planned for the second half of 2025.

The state government in North Rhine-Westphalia is strengthening family friendliness in the state with various measures. These include the "Family Municipality" award - presented for the first time in 2024.
