The house sparrow (Passer domesticus)—also known as the sparrow or house sparrow—is a species of bird in the sparrow family (Passeridae) and one of the best-known and most widespread songbirds. The sparrow became associated with humans over 10,000 years ago as a synanthropic species. Following numerous intentional or accidental introductions, it can be found almost everywhere where people live year-round, with the exception of a few areas.
