What are the costs associated with adoption?

When couples who want to have children consider adoption, the costs are often a secondary concern at first. However, the amounts involved vary considerably depending on the type of adoption: With a domestic adoption, the costs are manageable. With an international adoption, you should expect significantly higher expenses. In this article, we’ll give you an overview.

Do we need a lawyer, and how much does it cost?

Representation by an attorney is generally not necessary. If you wish to discuss your questions about adoption with an attorney, you will be responsible for covering the consultation fees yourself.

Ask what costs will be charged: Fees may be calculated on an hourly basis, as a flat fee, or in accordance with the Lawyers’ Fees Act. Legal aid is available to eligible individuals under certain conditions.

Under no circumstances should you use the services of an unrecognized adoption agency—neither in Germany nor in the child’s home country. Without the support of authorized agencies, an adoption is generally not recognized in Germany and is also prohibited. In this case, you face serious legal and financial consequences, including charges of complicity in child trafficking.
