Working together for more equal opportunities

Many municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia have already established solutions to increase the take-up of benefits under the education and participation package. The common goal is to break down barriers to take-up in order to promote and support children and young people from low-income families in particular.

Information in plain language

All children and young people in Wuppertal should have the same opportunities for education and participation. For this reason, the city has decided to publish the brochure "Bildung und Teilhabe für Kinder und junge Erwachsene. Information in plain language". This addresses all families in Wuppertal equally and shows what opportunities the education and participation package offers.

The brochure is the first from the city of Wuppertal in plain language. The contents have been checked by the Office for Plain Language and certified with the seal for plain language. In addition to general information on the education and participation package, the brochure also provides a description of all benefit components in plain language:

  • Excursions, class trips and daycare trips
  • Money for the ticket to school
  • After-school help
  • Lunch
  • Leisure activities
  • School supplies and school books

"With a language that takes everyone along, we want to show what great opportunities the participation package offers for families."
Thomas Lenz, CEO of the Wuppertal Jobcenter

In NRW, around 25% of all children and young people under the age of 18 are at risk of poverty. The education and participation package was introduced to create a material basis for equal opportunities. Read here why it is important to promote education and participation.

What are the reasons why families do not make use of the BuT benefits to which they are entitled? The Familienportal.NRW presents studies and tools that address the issue of take-up, present the challenges faced by local authorities and discuss possible solutions to increase the use of BuT benefits.
