An overview of the most important financial and formal aspects of giving birth

  • Inform your employer about your pregnancy early on, at the latest in the 12th week.
  • Take care of this before the birth: Apply for maternity benefit and apply for parental leave. Unmarried couples should have paternity recognized and submit a declaration of joint custody.
  • After the birth: Register the baby at the registry office (the maternity clinic may take care of this) and the health insurance company, apply for child benefit and parental allowance.
  • If necessary, you may be able to claim additional financial benefits such as child supplement or housing benefit.
