Desire to have children in rainbow families
WHEN QUEER COUPLES WANT TO START A FAMILY
In addition to the classic father-mother-child family, other colorful family constellations enrich the diversity in North Rhine-Westphalia. Many queer couples also want a life with children. This is not always so easy, even though "marriage for all" has made the joint adoption of children possible since 2017.
RAINBOW FAMILIES FACE SPECIAL CHALLENGES
Rainbow families who want to have children still face prejudices in our society. Yet studies have long shown that children in same-sex families develop just as well as those in a father-mother-child family, for example.
Rainbow families not only have to cope with the usual challenges of everyday life with children. They are confronted with special requirements that are related to their family constellation. These may include having to justify their desire to have children to their social environment, discrimination or the public pressure to prove that their family functions "perfectly". This can cause additional stress and potential conflict for the relationship.
WAYS TO HAVE CHILDREN
Since "marriage for all" has been possible in Germany, rainbow families have been on an equal footing with heterosexual couples in most areas. However, rainbow families have to overcome a number of hurdles on the way to having their dream child, ranging from the realization and recognition of parenthood to the adoption process.
