Family Centers in North Rhine-Westphalia

A network for the promotion and support of children and families

Text last updated: 2026-09-21

Family centers are community hubs in neighborhoods. They offer easily accessible programs and counseling for children and parents on everyday life, parenting, and educational issues. But what sets them apart, and how do they differ from a “regular” daycare center?

Read here to find out what makes family centers so special and how parents can benefit from their wide range of services.

What is the purpose of family centers?

Providing the best possible support for families—especially in socially disadvantaged neighborhoods and high-need areas—is one of the most important goals of the North Rhine-Westphalia state government. Family centers play a key role in this effort.

Keeping doors wide open for families helps build closeness and trust. This is the foundation for making help and support more accessible. The family centers’ low-threshold services invite people to come, participate, share ideas, and engage in joint activities. This makes it easier to close educational gaps and improve children’s opportunities from the start. In addition, the centers specifically reach out to mothers and fathers to strengthen parents’ parenting and educational skills.

These programs are offered in collaboration with local organizations and partners. For example, family centers work together with nearby elementary schools, neighborhood gymnastics and sports clubs, parenting counseling services, therapists, and debt counseling services.

A wide variety of options—easily accessible locally

Family centers focus on the entire family. The staff members on the teams have a thorough understanding of the social circumstances of families in the neighborhood and can tailor their services specifically to the needs of local parents.

This allows them to organize and connect families with support services that are relevant to their daily lives and easily accessible for parents and children. Families in challenging circumstances, single parents, and families with an immigrant background benefit from this in particular.
