To determine the parental contribution, you will need:

  • the concluded childcare contract with a childcare facility or a childminder.
  • Proof of income (e.g. tax and parental salary). tax assessment notices and salary statements from parents, maintenance, BAföG, sickness benefit)

If you would like to apply to have the parental contribution waived, you will also need:

  • Application for waiver of the parental contribution
  • Proof of receipt of a social benefit

The parental contributions vary depending on the income to be taken as a basis and the scope of care for the child. They are set by the local public youth welfare authorities, i.e. the youth welfare offices. They are paid via the payment service offered by the responsible local authority.

It may also be possible to waive the parental contributions.

In addition to the parental contributions, the provider of the childcare facility or the childminder can charge an appropriate fee for meals.

Simply explained

After you have signed a childcare contract with a childminder or daycare center, the amount of your parental contribution will be determined by the youth welfare office.

This amount can vary depending on the municipality and city. The amount and scale of parental contributions for daycare facilities and childminders should correspond.

If the youth welfare office levies parental contributions, it must provide for a social scale in accordance with the provisions of the Child Education Act and take into account the parents' economic capacity and the duration of care (Section 51 (4) KiBiz).

Under certain conditions and upon separate application, the parental contribution can also be waived. This is the case if you receive one of the following social benefits:

  • citizen's allowance or social benefit under SGB II,
  • social assistance under SGB XII,
  • housing benefit under the Housing Benefit Act,
  • benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act or
  • child supplement under the Federal Child Benefit Act

You can be exempted from paying parental contributions for the months in which you receive these benefits.

What requirements must be met?

  • A confirmed childcare contract with a childcare facility or a childminder.
  • Presentation of the required documents.
