Don't hesitate to seek advice if you have any questions—there are numerous resources available, both locally in many municipalities and online, that can assist you with free information and counseling services.

Where can I find help and counseling?

  • Single parents can receive counseling and support from the Youth Welfare Office, especially when it comes to conflicts of interest regarding custody and visitation rights. The Youth Welfare Office mediates between the parents and helps identify solutions.
  • Single parents can find quick and straightforward help, as well as referrals to professional counseling services, on the information platform of the Association of Single Mothers and Fathers in North Rhine-Westphalia (VAMV).
The association has also set up a telephone hotline for single parents. The counseling service can be reached at 0201 82774-799.
  • Using the service map from VAMV-NRW, you can filter specifically for services in your area. There’s a wide range of options available, from counseling centers and meetups with other single parents to courses for children and vacation packages.
  • Are you looking for a counseling center for parenting issues, the Youth Welfare Office, debt counseling, or a local family education center?  The Family Guide here on Familienportal.NRW is just a click away and helps you find the right resource near where you live.

On the STARK website, you’ll find information and tips from experts on topics such as relationshiprelationship crises, breakups, and divorce.

The Federal Mother and Child Foundation helps pregnant women facing special financial hardships obtain clothing, baby supplies, and childcare.

Being a single parent often comes with financial challenges. Maybe your child wants to learn to play the piano? Is a school trip lasting several days coming up? Or does your child need special learning support?

That’s where the Education and Participation Package comes in: Single parents who receive housing assistance or the child supplement can apply for grants.
