Applying for family insurance in plain language

Are you insured with a statutory health insurance fund?

If so, you may also be able to insure your family.

You don't have to pay any contributions for this.

Family insurance is health insurance for your family.

This means:
Your children or your spouse are also insured.

You can apply for family insurance

if:

• you have statutory health insurance
• and your family lives in Germany.

These persons from your family can also be insured:

Spouse or spouse's partner:

• The person is not covered by statutory health insurance.
• They are not self-employed.
• They do not have private health insurance.
• They earn little or no money.

Children:

Children can also be insured if they are

An adult child has a disability:

And the child therefore cannot work?

Then this child can remain covered by family insurance.

Even if they are older than 25.

Stepchildren, foster children, grandchildren:

They can also be insured if:

• the children also live in the household.
• Or: you pay for the children's lives.

You will need various documents.

For example:

• A copy of your wife's or husband's salary certificate
• or a copy of the current income tax statement
• Your child is 23 years old or older:
  School or study certificate

Sometimes you need other documents.

For example:

• Pension certificates
• Proof of assets

Check with your health insurance provider.

You submit the application to your health insurance fund.
