What is a life partnership certificate?

A civil partnership certificate is a document from the registry office.

It shows that you have registered a civil partnership.

The certificate contains:

  • the names of the two partners
  • the date and place of birth
  • the place and date on which the civil partnership was registered
  • the religion, if any

The certificate is therefore proof that you have a civil partnership.

You can get the certificate from the registry office.

The place where you registered your civil partnership.

What types of life partnership certificates are there?

You can get the life partnership certificate in two forms:

The first is called the life partnership certificate.

This is the normal certificate.

It shows that you have registered a life partnership.

The second is called a notarized printout from the civil partnership register.

This is a copy of the entry in the registry office.

The copy contains all the data about your civil partnership.

For example: When and where you registered your civil partnership.

The copy can also contain any subsequent changes.

For example, if the life partnership was dissolved.

You can obtain the printout as:

  • New printout from the electronic register
    If the registry office already uses it.
  • Copy or exact transcript of the old entry in the register

Who can receive the life partnership certificate?

The life partnership certificate contains personal data.

Therefore, not every person may receive it.

These persons may receive the life partnership certificate:

  • the person themselves - from the age of 16
  • their life partner
  • their parents
  • their children
  • their siblings with a legitimate interest
  • other persons and relatives with a legal interest.
    For example, with a letter from the probate court.

Important:

Was the life partnership entered into abroad?

If so, it must first be notarized in Germany.

Only then can you apply for the certificate.

What do you need for the application?

To apply, you will need:

  • your identity card or passport
  • if someone else is making the application on your behalf:
  • written power of attorney
  • ID of the authorized person
  • or ID of the representative
  • for other persons:
  • proof of legal interest

You can apply for a new certificate at any time.

How much does the life partnership certificate cost?

The first certificate costs 10 euros.

Each additional certificate costs 5 euros.
